Tranplants from the Midwest, Eliza and Eric Gonder established Fezziwig Fram in 1990. Elisa is the farm operator, while Eric’s “day job” is head veterinarian for the Butterball turkey industry. We raise Belgian Draft Horses and produce commercial beef cattle as a small cow-calf operation.
We decided to raise Belgians, and from the beginning, took a special interest in the Brabant Belgians. They are still raised, both in Belgium and in North America, for their robust, muscular builds, excellent dispositions, and suitability for work. As the American Belgian fanciers have concentrated more on color and show-ring refinement, many breeders and owners have turned to Brabant-influenced horses to maintain the fundamentals of the original breed. Both styles are eligible to register with the Belgian Draft Horse Corporation of America.
We obtained some of our foundation stock from Anne Harper of Vermont, an early proponent and importer of Brabants from Belgium. Others have come from Amish farms. Our horses have gone on to careers in hitches, on farms as brood-mares, stallions and work horses, and into the woods for logging in environmentally sensitive areas.
Now, with the indignities of ageing, arthritis, and the toll of hard work, we are less able to keep up with the more vigorous aspects of training and working the large number of horses on our farm. Thus, we are offering a number of the best of these horses, both young and mature, to those of you who share our enthusiasm for these great horses.
